WELCOME TO THE MAHJONG GUILD COMMUNITY!

Our community is built on mutual respect, shared passion for mahjong, and a commitment to helping each other grow as players. These Community Guidelines help ensure The Mahjong Guild remains a positive, welcoming space for all members.

BY PARTICIPATING IN OUR COMMUNITY, YOU AGREE TO FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES.

1. OUR COMMUNITY VALUES

1.1 Respect

Treat all members with courtesy, kindness, and respect, regardless of skill level, background, or opinions.

1.2 Inclusivity

We welcome players of all skill levels, ages, backgrounds, and experience. Everyone deserves to feel welcomed and valued.

1.3 Helpfulness

Share knowledge generously. Remember that we were all beginners once.

1.4 Integrity

Be honest, authentic, and trustworthy in all your interactions.

1.5 Positivity

Focus on constructive feedback and encouragement rather than criticism and negativity.

2. EXPECTED BEHAVIOR

We expect all members to:

2.1 Be Respectful

  • Treat others as you wish to be treated
  • Disagree respectfully without personal attacks
  • Accept that people have different opinions and playing styles
  • Respect moderators’ decisions

2.2 Be Helpful

  • Answer questions when you can
  • Share strategies and knowledge
  • Provide constructive feedback
  • Welcome new members

2.3 Be Honest

  • Represent yourself accurately
  • Don’t impersonate others
  • Credit sources when sharing others’ content
  • Be transparent about affiliations

2.4 Stay On Topic

  • Keep discussions relevant to mahjong and related topics
  • Use appropriate forums for different discussions
  • Don’t derail conversations

2.5 Communicate Clearly

  • Use clear, understandable language
  • Proofread before posting
  • Use proper formatting for readability
  • Avoid excessive use of ALL CAPS or emojis

3. PROHIBITED CONDUCT

The following behaviors are NOT permitted:

3.1 Harassment and Abuse

  • Personal attacks or insults
  • Bullying or intimidation
  • Threats of any kind
  • Stalking or unwanted contact
  • Doxxing (sharing personal information)

3.2 Hate Speech and Discrimination

  • Discriminatory language or behavior based on:
    • Race, ethnicity, or national origin
    • Religion or beliefs
    • Gender or gender identity
    • Sexual orientation
    • Age
    • Disability
    •  Any other protected characteristic

3.3 Inappropriate Content

  • Sexually explicit material
  • Graphic violence or gore
  • Illegal content
  • Content promoting self-harm
  • Excessively profane language

3.4 Spam and Self-Promotion

  • Excessive self-promotion
  • Unsolicited advertising
  • Repetitive posts
  • Off-topic commercial content
  • Pyramid schemes or MLM

3.5 Misinformation

  • Deliberately spreading false information
  • Misrepresenting yourself or credentials
  • Falsifying tournament results
  • Impersonating other members or officials

3.6 Disruptive Behavior

  • Trolling (posting to provoke reactions)
  • Flame wars (hostile arguments)
  • Derailing discussions
  • Excessive negativity
  • Backseat moderating (telling others what to do)

3.7 Illegal Activity

  • Discussing or promoting illegal activities
  • Sharing copyrighted material without permission
  • Attempting to hack or disrupt services
  • Any violation of applicable laws

4. FORUM-SPECIFIC GUIDELINES

4.1 Strategy Discussions

  • Share strategies constructively
  • Explain your reasoning
  • Accept that there are multiple valid approaches
  • Don’t claim your way is the “only” way

4.2 Tournament Discussions

  • Congratulate winners graciously
  • Accept losses with dignity
  • Don’t make excuses or blame others
  • Focus on learning from experience

4.3 Product Discussions

  • Share honest, balanced reviews
  • Disclose if you have affiliations
  • Don’t attack others for their preferences
  • Respect that budgets and preferences vary

4.4 Social Discussions

  • Keep it friendly and inclusive
  • Avoid controversial or divisive topics
  • Stay respectful of different viewpoints
  • Remember this is a mahjong community first

5. VIRTUAL EVENT CONDUCT

When participating in virtual events:

5.1 General Conduct

  • Join on time
  • Dress appropriately if video is on
  • Minimize background noise
  • Stay engaged and respectful

5.2 Communication

  • Use chat feature appropriately
  • Raise hand or use designated method to speak
  • Don’t interrupt speakers
  • Turn off mic when not speaking

5.3 Recording and Screenshots

  • Don’t record without permission
  • Don’t screenshot private discussions
  • Respect others’ privacy
  • Ask before sharing event content

6. MEMBER DIRECTORY USE

6.1 Appropriate Use

The member directory is for:

  • Connecting with fellow members
  • Finding local players
  • Networking within the community

6.2 Prohibited Use

Do NOT use the directory for:

  • Spam or unsolicited marketing
  • Harvesting email addresses
  • Sharing information outside the community
  • Commercial solicitation

6.3 Contact Preferences

  • Respect opt-out preferences
  • Don’t contact members who haven’t opted in
  • Accept “no” if someone doesn’t want to connect
  • Report directory abuse to moderators

7. CONTENT POSTING GUIDELINES

7.1 Original Content

  • Post your own content or properly credit others
  • Don’t plagiarize
  • Link to sources when appropriate

7.2 Quality Standards

  • Proofread before posting
  • Use clear, descriptive titles
  • Include relevant context
  • Format for readability

7.3 Copyright

  • Only post content you have rights to use
  • Don’t post full copyrighted articles
  • Link to content rather than copying it
  • Respect intellectual property

7.4 Privacy

  • Don’t post others’ personal information
  • Don’t share private messages without permission
  • Respect confidentiality
  • Ask before posting photos of others

8. MODERATION

8.1 Moderator Authority

Our moderators have the authority to:

  • Edit or remove content
  • Issue warnings
  • Temporarily suspend accounts
  • Permanently ban members
  • Close or lock discussions

8.2 Reporting Violations

If you see content that violates these guidelines:

  • Click “Report” button on the post
  • Or email moderators@themahjongguild.com
  • Provide specific details
  • Don’t engage or respond to the violation

8.3 Moderator Actions

Moderators may:

  • Issue a warning (first offense usually)
  • Require apology or correction
  • Temporary suspension (repeat offenses)
  • Permanent ban (serious or repeated violations)

8.4 Appeals

If you disagree with a moderator action:

  • Email moderators@themahjongguild.com
  • Explain your perspective calmly
  • Provide context if relevant
  • Accept the final decision

9. CONSEQUENCES OF VIOLATIONS

9.1 Progressive Discipline

We typically follow this approach:

  • First violation: Warning
  • Second violation: 7-day suspension
  • Third violation: 30-day suspension
  • Fourth violation: Permanent ban

9.2 Serious Violations

Some violations may result in immediate permanent ban:

  • Harassment or threats
  • Hate speech
  • Illegal activity
  • Doxxing
  • Repeated violations after warnings

9.3 No Refunds

Members who are banned for violating guidelines are NOT eligible for membership refunds.

10. UPDATES TO GUIDELINES

We may update these Community Guidelines at any time. Significant changes will be communicated via:

  • Email to all members
  • Announcement in forums
  • Updated “Last Updated” date

Continued participation after changes constitutes acceptance of updated guidelines.
